Is commence formal or informal?

Commence simply means to start, or to begin. It is a very formal version of those two synonyms. Unlike to start, or to begin, commence is not used as often.

What is the synonym of Commence?

Here are a few examples to show you the differences between the three:

  • Come on dad the movie is about to start.
  • The test will begin in 5 minutes.
  • We will now commence with the crowning of Queen Elizabeth the Second!

As you can see commence is very formal, and it comes from older times in the English language. While all three mean the same thing, it’s the situation that dictates which to use.
